Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in West Goshen, Pennsylvania. When in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized hair tests with centers across all U.S. cities ready to conduct these assessments. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can usually be tested. Hair assessments cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

The adoption of hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent over the past years. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests to traditional urine evaluations. Hair follicle tests are essential for employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and those on probation. One key advantage is the extended detection timeline for drugs, up to 90 days, through supervised collection, making it difficult to tamper with. For drug use detection within five days, urine tests still prove the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. By obtaining hair from near the scalp, it offers a detection window for alcohol and drugs lasting up to about three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), yields 100mg of hair—the preferred sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. It's best to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is absent, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing results process in a lab involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises a preliminary check for substances, providing an economical way to exclude drug use in most samples. However, a positive result must undergo confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Upon receiving a presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair analysis a particularly challenging procedure.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positives are cleansed as necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly improbable, so results are more reliable.
  • Offers historical perspective: It reveals usage patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after usage.
  • Price: Hair drug tests are often more costly than other methods.
  • Result variations: Drug metabolite concentrations can be affected by variables like hair color and personal hair growth variations.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
