Process Overview
The four principal stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening entails an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to be permissible in legal proceedings. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.
In instances where a sample is tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening.
To confirm any positive screening result, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are employed. All presumptive positive samples are thoroughly washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
