Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in West Hills, Pennsylvania. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing, with testing centers available across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body is required for testing. Hair tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular for conducting drug testing. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug use policies, courts, and probation individuals often rely on hair follicle drug tests. These tests offer a longer detection period for drug use, up to 90 days, are conducted in observed conditions, and are challenging to tamper with. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

* You must register by phone or online to receive your donor pass/registration prior to proceeding to the testing center. You must bring a valid government issued ID along with the registration/barcode number which was sent to you by email.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It records long-term use of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand. When collected adjacent to the scalp, hair offers up to roughly a 3-month detection range for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, relatively challenging to alter, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, extra analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we are discussing scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to be permissible in legal proceedings. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

In instances where a sample is tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening.

To confirm any positive screening result, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are employed. All presumptive positive samples are thoroughly washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly hard, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It reflects a pattern of drug consumption over time, not solely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate detection: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp
