In West Middlesex, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert, with facilities across all major cities in the country that provide hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific needs.

Recently, there's been a shift towards hair follicle drug testing for substance screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair analyses over traditional urine tests due to their zero-tolerance policies. Hair follicle tests offer advantages such as an extended detection window for drugs, lasting up to 90 days, and are gathered under supervision, making them nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now widely acknowledged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair preserves a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When acquired near the scalp, hair offers an approximately 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG additions and/or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. In the context of head hair, we mean scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes confirming secure sealing and proper shipping of the sample, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to discount drug usage in most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed for courtroom acceptance. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and organised for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are leached from hair at concentrations noticeably lower than those in alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug testing the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subject to scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug examinations can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistant to tampering: Hair drug tests are exceedingly challenging to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage pattern: It allows for understanding drug use patterns over a duration, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent ingestion: It requires approximately 5-7 days post-drug use for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the assessment analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
