Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in West Sunbury, Pennsylvania. If you require a hair or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities across all cities Nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing options.

In recent times, the preference for drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle tests. An increasing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now opt for hair drug tests instead of the traditional urine ones. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary authorities favor hair tests due to the extended detection window of approximately 90 days. These tests, collected under observation, are nearly impossible to manipulate. Yet, for drug use detected up to the last 5 days, a urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers in the growing hair strand's fibers. Collected near the scalp, hair can provide around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands of hair (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests over 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair lacks, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. When discussing head hair, we only mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core phases in laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This covers verifying the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid check for drug abuse. Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage on most samples, yet a positive screen must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening require a further confirmation.

If a sample indicates positive in the Screening stage, extra hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most complex method.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenge to deceive: It's extremely hard to cheat a hair drug test, thus the results are more reliable.
  • Offers historical data: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolites' concentration in the hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
