Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in West Wyoming, Pennsylvania. If you're searching for a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities throughout the nation ready to conduct tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from your head or body. Our assessments can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing solutions.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become part of drug testing procedures. Employers, the judicial system, and Substance Abuse specialists are favoring hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle assessments serve employers practicing strict no-drug policies, the court system, and probation situations. The primary advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, making cheating nearly impossible, although urine tests remain the best for detecting recent use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and other drug use. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal approximately a 3-month period of alcohol and drug detection. Hair samples are easy to collect, not easily altered, and simple to mail.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp is required to provide 100mg of hair, the recommended amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it's advised to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest evaluating the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four essential steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step encompasses verification that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a reliable method for disproving drug use on the majority of samples, a positive result needs verification for court admissibility. Any samples that return a positive result in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample receives a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from the hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive Screening result occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing a presumptive positive result are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair acknowledgment and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, compared to urine tests which offer a more limited detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a chronology of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more expensive than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
