Accredited Drug Testing excels in offering comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Westline, Pennsylvania. Whether the requirement is for hair drug or alcohol testing, our proficiency in this domain is unparalleled, with facilities spread across numerous locations Nationwide prepared to conduct these evaluations. Generally, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body suffices. Hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific requirements.

In modern contexts, the preference for drug testing has progressively shifted towards incorporating hair follicle drug evaluations. A growing number of employers, judiciary entities, and Substance Abuse experts are favoring hair-based testing over conventional urine tests. Employers instating zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probationary individuals primarily benefit from these hair follicle tests due to the extended timeline it offers for detecting substance use—up to 90 days—with observation during sample collection, making it resistant to tampering. Nonetheless, for identifying recent substance use within a 5-day frame, urine-based testing retains its precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as hair grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month window of detection for substances like alcohol. It's straightforward to collect, tougher to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

An optimal sample comprises a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil diameter) nearest to the scalp, providing 100mg of hair for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advised to collect 150mg. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for accuracy. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair, whereas body hair refers to all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Procedure Outline

The lab processing of a drug test result encompasses four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a specimen into the lab's system. This step ensures the specimen was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial, cost-efficient evaluation for drugs of abuse. While it's effective for most samples, any positive findings require confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positives in Screening need secondary verification.

If the Screening produces a presumptive positive, further hair is extracted from the specimen and prepared for Extraction, where drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation follows any positive result in Screening using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The encompassing laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests detect for shorter durations.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair tests are tough to tamper with, yielding more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical consumption insights: They offer a timeline of drug use rather than only recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection begins approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
