Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Westover, Pennsylvania. Whether it's for drug or alcohol detection, our expertise is in hair analysis, with facilities available across cities nationwide to conduct hair evaluations. Typically, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or the body is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other analyses.

In the past few years, there's been an uptick in using hair follicle analyses for drug screenings. This test type is favored over traditional urine tests by many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse specialists. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and those on probation rely on these assessments. Among its advantages is a longer detection timeframe for drug use—up to 90 days—collected under observation, making tampering nearly impossible. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug markers by locking them into the strands as they grow. When cut close to the scalp, the hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection range for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising about 200 hair strands (roughly a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample for assessment and verification. For EtG, additional checks, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to have 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair may be utilized. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types such as facial hair, axillary hair, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test comprises four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial introduction of a specimen into the lab's system. It includes ensuring that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening is an initial rapid test for drug presence. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive samples in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

In cases where a sample shows a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at concentrations much lower than those required by other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most demanding to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is very challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers usage history: It can illustrate a user’s drug intake trend over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Characteristics like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the drug metabolite levels within hair.

Note: While often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand, not the scalp-embedded follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
