Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Westport, Pennsylvania. If you're seeking a hair test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair assessments, boasting facilities across the country that administer hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists opt for a hair drug test over conventional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, judicial bodies, and probation officers due to their longer detection span of up to 90 days, secure collection, and resistance to tampering. Yet, urine tests remain unmatched for detecting drug use within a recent 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. The hair strands entrap drug and alcohol biomarkers, providing an extended timeline of substance use. Collecting hair close to the scalp can offer a detection timeframe of up to three months for substances. This testing method is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands of hair (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg, considered the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair may be taken. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab handling of a drug testing result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase where a specimen is processed within a lab’s system. This phase involves ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening represents an initial quick evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method for excluding drug use in most cases, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for court acceptability. Samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If Screening presents a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are derived from hair at a far lower concentration than alternative methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Verification of any Screening positives is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo cleansing before Confirmation as required. The full process chain, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days in the past, whereas urine tests offer a more limited timeframe.
  • Cheating difficulty: It's extremely hard to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insights: It shows a record of drug use over time, not just the latest use.

Drawbacks:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically cost more than other drug testing types.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
