Accredited Drug Testing provides a comprehensive service for hair follicle drug testing in Westwood, Pennsylvania. If you're looking for a hair drug or alcohol test, we're the experts in hair testing, with centers available nationwide, including your city, to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from your head, but body hair may be used. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing needs.

Recently, drug tests increasingly use hair follicle samples. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over urine analyses. This method is favored by those with strict no-drug policies, judicial mandates, and probationary guidelines, as it offers an extended detection timeline of up to 90 days, making evasion exceedingly difficult. Yet, for usage within 5 days, urine tests remain unparalleled in precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, a hair sample may provide a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, approximately corresponding to 200 strands of hair (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp will weigh 100mg, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair might be collected. When indicating head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other varieties of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's framework. This step ensures the sample was securely sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial swift analysis for abused substances. Although Screening is economical for ignoring drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to hold up in court. All samples that appear positive in Screening demand a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a far lower concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), rendering hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Any positive results from screening undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is quite hard to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks usage trends: Offers a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Does not indicate recent consumption: It takes 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

  • Hair follicle testing excels over urine testing by offering superior accuracy.
  • With an extended window of detection, hair tests are unmatched in identifying drug use history.
  • The reliability of hair tests is evident, with few known instances of tampering or inaccuracy.
  • Traditional urine tests cannot compare in terms of detection longevity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
