Delivered by Accredited Drug Testing, comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services are available in Wilburton Number One, PA. When a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our specialization in hair analysis is supported by a network of testing centers in cities across the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has grown in popularity as a method for detecting substance use, with more workplaces and judicial entities opting for it over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, court systems, and probation programs often rely on these tests. Key advantages include its extended detection window of up to 90 days and the difficulty to deceive the observed collection process. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the gold standard for identifying very recent drug use, typically within five days.

What it is, How it works

The practice of hair testing is increasingly acknowledged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a repository of evidence over time, collecting biomarkers within the filaments of the developing hair. If taken near the scalp, hair can show evidence of substance use for up to roughly three months. Hair is straightforward to obtain, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample that is 1.5 inches and comprises about 200 strands (about the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, an optimal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG additions or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It is recommended to measure the weight of the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair only, whereas "body hair" includes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

There are four central stages in the lab processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of documenting a sample in the laboratory's framework. This phase ensures the sample's proper sealing and delivery, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and reconciles any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use for most samples, any positive screen must undergo confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

In cases where a sample shows a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional strands are taken from the initial batch for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower levels than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug assays particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any initially positive screen is implemented using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples initially positive are cleaned before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory cycle from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Pros of hair drug screening:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug consumption for as long as three months, unlike urine assessments which cover a shorter time frame.
  • Hard to deceive: Due to the inherent difficulty in falsifying a hair drug assessment, its results are highly reliable.
  • Shows past usage trends: It can reveal a user's drug history over a noticeable timeframe rather than recent activity alone.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent activity: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days post-use to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug assessments are costlier than alternate drug testing approaches.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often mentioned as "hair follicle tests", these assessments evaluate the hair strand itself and not the scalp-embedded follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
