In Wildwood, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Specializing in both hair drug and alcohol testing, our services are accessible nationwide, including a local site in every city. To conduct the test, a length of hair ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches is required from either the head or body. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other analyses.

Due to its longer detection period, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity, replacing standard urine tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts frequently choose this method. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and probation clients often use hair testing due to its accuracy. Although a urine test is more reliable for tracing recent consumption within the last five days, hair tests extend observation up to 90 days, making them hard to manipulate.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has become recognized as an effective mechanism for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When samples are taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimum sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. In cases where scalp hair is not accessible, a similar volume of body hair can be sampled. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in a laboratory encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This entails confirming the secure sealing and proper shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court acceptance. Samples that yield presumptive positive results in Screening require additional confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positives during the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, substances are drawn out from hair at much reduced levels compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most challenging to conduct.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation, if necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, versus the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is particularly hard to manipulate hair drug tests, ensuring greater result precision.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal drug use trends over time, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug screening techniques.
  • Result variances: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Wildwood, PA, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests with its superior detection accuracy. The reliability of hair tests offers a distinct advantage over traditional urine testing methods, making them a more efficient choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
