Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug evaluations in Worthington, Pennsylvania. When a hair drug or alcohol assessment is needed, our company excels in hair testing, maintaining testing sites across all cities Nationwide capable of executing a hair test. Ideally, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head's crown or utilize body hair for analysis. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug-testing practices. Organizations, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug evaluations over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle assessments serve employers with strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and probationers. A key advantage is its extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, conducted under observation, and very difficult to tamper with. Nonetheless, for recent drug use detection within five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for the identification of drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. This type of sample is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be taken. Referring to head hair implies scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s system. This stage includes ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening refers to a preliminary quick analysis for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a more limited detection interval.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Delivers historical data: It provides a timeline of drug consumption over an extended period, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
