In Yatesville, PA, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether it's for drug or alcohol detection, our specialized hair testing services are accessible nationwide. Required hair length is around 1.5 to 2 inches on the scalp, with body hair as an alternative. Various analyses such as drugs or alcohol/ETG can be performed through hair samples.

Hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug testing in recent years. It's favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts over urine tests. Employers adhering to zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation services opt for it due to its extended 90-day drug use detection feature, making it hard to tamper. However, urine tests still excel in detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can reveal an extensive timeline of drugs and alcohol by entrapping biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When hair is clipped close to the scalp, it can offer close to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four fundamental phases in the laboratory handling of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the act of inserting a sample into a lab’s system initially. This step involves ensuring the sample is correctly sealed and transported, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary information entry not incorporated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary swift check for drug abuse indicators. Although Screening presents a budget-friendly approach to dismiss potential drug usage in most specimens, a positive screen must undergo verification to be legally valid. Samples that yield a presumptively positive result during Screening demand subsequent confirmation.

When a sample is screened as presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch and processed for Extraction. During this phase, drug substances are extracted from the hair at significantly lesser concentrations compared to alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most challenging protocol to implement.

To confirm any positive Screening outcome, methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS are employed. All samples that test presumptive positively undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guideline and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation stipulations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection duration.
  • Cheating is complicated: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a drug consumption pattern over an extended timeframe, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Lacks ability to detect recent intake: Drugs generally require 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables such as hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle itself beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
