In York Springs, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether for drugs or alcohol, our specialty in hair-based testing is supported by our national network of centers ready to administer this test. Typically, samples require between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, which can be taken from the crown or body, and can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or specific tests.

Recently, reliance on hair follicle drug testing has increased in drug screening practices. Courts, employers, and Substance Abuse experts often favor hair tests over urine screenings for more stringent drug-use policies. The key advantage is a detection window that lasts up to 90 days, making cheating near impossible due to observed collections, though a urine test may be preferred for very recent substance use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant instrument for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the inner structure of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to send.

A hair sample, about 1.5 inches long containing approximately 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, ideal for analysis and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or analysis exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is missing, a comparable volume of body hair may be collected. When we mention head hair, we are referring solely to scalp hair. Body hair is any other type (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Validation.

Accessioning comprises the preliminary processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s records. This involves confirming the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data entry absent from an electronic custody record system.

Screening is an initial rapid evaluation for substance misuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective method to eliminate drug usage in most cases, a positive screen must be validated for legal admissibility. Any samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), highlighting why hair drug analysis is notably challenging to conduct.

Validation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before validation as needed. The laboratory process, from Accessioning to Validation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug analyses can trace substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a briefer detection period.
  • Difficulty in evasion: It is quite challenging to deceive a hair drug test, increasing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: It provides a substance use pattern over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can affect metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", this analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In York Springs, PA, hair follicle testing proves superior to traditional urine tests due to its extended detection duration and accuracy. Unlike urine tests, which can be limited in scope and time frame, hair tests offer a more comprehensive detection window, often reaching up to 90 days. This method is more tamper-resistant, preventing attempts to falsify results, and giving employers and officials greater assurance of authenticity and reliability.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in York Springs, PA provides an extensive detection period for substance use, lasting up to 90 days. This long-term visibility offers employers a detailed understanding of an individual’s substance history, contributing to informed decision-making processes. This extended timeline stands in stark contrast to the shorter detection windows typical of urine tests, enhancing the breadth and depth of drug use insights.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

York Springs, PA benefits from the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests, minimizing the risk of sample adulteration. This robust method guarantees reliable and unquestionable results by making it much harder to alter or manipulate test outcomes. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
