Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Youngstown, Pennsylvania. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in this field, with facilities across cities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other hair testing requirements.

In recent years, the preference for hair follicle drug testing methods has augmented. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for this method as opposed to conventional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation officers utilize hair follicle tests. The main advantage includes an extended detection timeline of up to 90 days, an observed collection ensures integrity, and it proves nearly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended chronicle of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection scope of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively difficult to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hairs (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding ten, a specimen weight of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. Should scalp hair not be available, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. When referencing head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Conversely, body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in processing a drug test result in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s framework. This step verifies the sample's secure seal and proper shipping, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputs any omitted data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial swift evaluation for drugs. While Screening proves cost-efficient in eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to stand in court. Samples that show presumptive positives during Screening mandate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample indicate positives during the Screening phase, further hair is selected from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug analysis is the most complex methodology to administer.

Any positive screening outcome is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing as needed before confirmation. The overarching laboratory operation, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests can identify drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that cover shorter periods.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It showcases drug intake trends over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair tests are typically costlier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual growth discrepancies can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite frequently being termed "hair follicle tests", this test assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
