Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle tests for drugs in Youngwood, Pennsylvania. If a hair or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in this field, and we have testing centers in various cities across the nation, including facilities that can complete a hair test. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, whether from the head or body. Hair testing is useful for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair test solutions.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a common method for drug testing. Numerous employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse experts are now opting for hair tests over the typical urine test. Employers with stringent no-drug policies, along with courts and individuals on probation, often use these tests. The main advantage is the extensive detection period, up to 90 days, which is collected under supervision, making tampering nearly impossible. Nevertheless, for recent drug use (<5 days), the urine test still provides the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for discovering drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Hair taken near the scalp can indicate drug use over a roughly three-month span. Collection is straightforward, alteration is somewhat hard, and shipping is convenient.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and panels numbering over 10, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If no scalp hair is accessible, the same quantity of body hair is collectable. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test procedures encompass four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab's system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any lacking data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs a quick preliminary check for drug presence. While cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, positive screenings must be validated to be court-admissible. Samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further verification.

If Screening suggests a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the initial batch for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most challenging to conduct.

Any positive findings from Screening undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples may be washed before Confirmation if necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair test is notably hard, increasing accuracy of the results.
  • Reveals historic usage: It chronicles drug patterns over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair tests are costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Known as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
