Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in Zion, Pennsylvania. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unrivaled, with testing centers scattered throughout the nation for easy access. Typically, an inch and a half to two inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair tests are versatile, capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or providing other tailored testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in recent times. They are favored by employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals who demand a hair drug test over the regular urine test. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probation individuals often utilize hair follicle testing due to its extended drug detection timeframe of approximately 90 days. This method is hard to tamper with, but urine tests still excel at identifying recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments stand out as a robust means for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows, hair offers a prolonged timeline of substance use. When sourced near the scalp, it can present a detection span of roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, only moderately susceptible to tampering, and convenient for transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp offers 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations beyond ten panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable volume of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we mean scalp hair alone; body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the preliminary processing of a specimen into the lab’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was adequately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to rule out drug usage in most specimens, results require confirmation to be court-admissible. Any specimens with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample returns presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial amount and prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is notably challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive outcomes are washed before confirmation as required. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Yields historical insight: It can reveal a usage pattern over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify immediate use: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often labeled "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
