Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Foster Center, Rhode Island. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our specialization in hair testing is supported by numerous centers nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body will suffice. These tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored hair analysis options.

The hair follicle drug test has gained popularity in recent years as a preferred method for many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts. This test is often chosen over the standard urine test, particularly favored by employers with strict drug-free policies, judicial bodies, and individuals under probation. The main advantage of this test is its ability to detect drug usage over a period of up to 90 days. Collected under observation, it is extremely difficult to tamper with, though urine tests remain superior for detecting recent substance use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. If collected near the scalp, hair provides approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, slightly challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, or tests above 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It is recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable volume of body hair may be collected. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing of a sample within the lab’s system. This step entails confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be valid in court. All samples that are presumptively positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is very challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, yielding more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a trend of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Foster Center, RI, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests are commonly used, they fall short in identifying long-term substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
