For comprehensive hair drug testing services in Kingston, Rhode Island, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to provider. Whether you are looking for hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing at centers across the nation makes us a reliable choice. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are needed. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and personalized options, ensuring precise results.

The hair follicle drug test has gained traction in recent years as a preferred method over traditional urine tests. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists now favor hair testing over urine analysis. The test's chief advantage is its longer detection period, with drug use traceable for up to 90 days. This method's monitored collection reduces potential tampering, although for recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains optimal.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair shaft. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It's suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. The term head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial introduction of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Samples that presumptively test positive during Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample presumptively tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a far lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers temporal data: It provides a timeline of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent intake: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolites concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often misnamed as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing presents distinct advantages over traditional urine testing in Kingston, RI. Among the most prominent benefits is the precision and reliability that hair testing provides. While urine tests capture recent usage, hair tests offer a broader picture of substance use, detecting drug intake over an extended timeframe.

  • Increased detection window
  • Lower likelihood of sample tampering
  • Greater reliability in results

These attributes make hair testing the superior choice for workplaces looking to maintain a drug-free environment. The accuracy in detecting long-term use supports policies intended to enhance safety and compliance at work, whereas urine tests typically offer a narrower scope of detection.

Extended Detection Window

Within Kingston, RI, hair follicle testing is unmatched in its ability to reveal drug consumption over an extended timespan. Unlike other methods, hair tests can track drug use for as many as 90 days, making it an invaluable tool for employers wanting a thorough understanding of an individual’s substance use history.

  • Comprehensive view of usage
  • Extended detection period
  • Efficient for employer evaluations

This extensive detection window provides a strategic advantage, as it allows stakeholders to gain deeper insights into behaviors that urine or blood tests might miss. Employers benefit from this oversight, fostering safer and more informed hiring and retaining practices.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Kingston, RI is widely recognized for its robust resistance to tampering. This testing method dramatically reduces the likelihood of sample adulteration, ensuring that the results obtained are reliable and beyond question.

  • Robust against tampering

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
