Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in North Foster, RI. If you're in need of hair-based drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this arena and offers testing facilities in all cities across the country capable of conducting hair tests. It typically requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair testing can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent for drug assessments. Employers, judges, and substance abuse specialists are favoring hair tests over traditional urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation programs rely on hair follicle testing. The key advantage is its extended detection time for substances, generally up to 90 days, coupled with observable sample collection that is very hard to compromise. Nevertheless, urine tests remain most efficient for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a valuable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeframe of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG testing, supplementals, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen with a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be insufficient, an equivalent portion of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial stage of processing a sample within a lab’s system. This step verifies that the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data logging absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary, efficient review for drugs of concern. While cost-effective, Screening cannot alone be used in court; any positive results require further confirmation. Samples with a preliminary positive outcome in Screening demand subsequent verification.

For samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening, additional hair is drawn from the original specimen for preparation in the Extraction phase. In this stage, drug compounds are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair analysis a particularly challenging technique.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly reviewed following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage for up to 90 days compared to the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to tamper with, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: They offer insight into longstanding drug patterns, rather than merely current usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally requires 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations tend to be costlier than other methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strands, not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
