Accredited Drug Testing offers all-encompassing hair follicle drug examinations in Allendale, South Carolina. If a hair drug or alcohol screening is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this domain with facilities across all cities Nationwide prepared to execute a hair test. For testing, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary in most situations. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. Many companies, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts are leaning towards hair tests over the conventional urine tests. Employers with strict drug use policies, legal institutions, and probation officers advocate for hair follicle tests. A key advantage is the prolonged detection duration of up to 90 days, making cheating nearly impossible during observation. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains a long-lasting record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol presence for up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) clipped close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is an ideal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, and/or beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is preferred. We advise utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen's weight. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar amount of body hair may be collected. In context, head hair specifically refers to scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses hair from other areas (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the introductory processing of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This encompasses verifying the correct sealing and dispatch of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening signifies an initial rapid test for drug abuse. Screening provides a cost-effective means to potentially dismiss drug usage in most samples; however, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples showing presumed positivity in Screening necessitate secondary verification.

If the Screening phase yields a presumptive positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening as one of the more complex methodologies to execute.

Affirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples with presumptive positivity undergo a washing step prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceptionally challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Historical usage data: Provides a usage pattern over time, rather than just indicating recent drug use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite commonly being termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
