In Ashton, South Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. As experts in hair substance testing, our centers are available across all cities nationwide to conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. This testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances as needed.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence in drug testing methodologies. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are increasingly preferring this method over traditional urine tests. Such tests are popular for strict zero-tolerance drug policies and probation monitoring because they provide a longer, often up to 90 days, detection window and are tough to evade. However, urine tests remain superior for recent drug use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a record-keeper over extended periods, capturing biomarkers in the strands of actively growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug usage over nearly a 3-month period. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it’s advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equal quantity of body hair may be used instead. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other kinds of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four major phases in the lab processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample enters a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and sent, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data not included by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drug use. Although Screening is cost-effective for eliminating drug usage for most samples, positive screens must be verified to be legally valid. Any samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening need further confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive during the Screening process, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are released from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are employed to confirm anything identified positively in screening. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing when required prior to confirmation. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the directives of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests track drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have limited timespan.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating in hair drug tests is exceptionally hard, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Records historical consumption: It captures a pattern of drug use across time, not just immediate past usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair within roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than alternative drug testing practices.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite levels can vary due to hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Ashton, SC, offers distinct advantages over urine tests. Notably, its superior detection window allows for a more comprehensive understanding of an individual’s substance use history. This is critical for employers enforcing stringent drug-free policies.

Unlike urine tests, which only capture a short snapshot of recent drug use, hair tests detect substances over a longer period, making them more reliable in identifying habitual substance abuse. This thorough detection capability is paramount in maintaining safe and compliant workplaces.

Extended Detection Window

One of the key strengths of hair follicle testing in Ashton, SC, is its extended detection window. This method can trace drug use for up to 90 days, providing a detailed view of an individual's substance history. Such insight is invaluable for employers seeking comprehensive evaluations of potential or current employees.

The extended detection period surpasses traditional testing methods, making it ideal for environments that require rigorous screening. With hair tests, organizations can better understand long-term substance use patterns, mitigating risks associated with workplace safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Ashton, SC, offers a tamper-resistant solution, minimizing concerns about sample adulteration. Unlike other methods, the integrity of hair samples is difficult to compromise, providing reliable and unquestionable results.

By reducing the risk of manipulation, hair tests ensure that the results reflect true substance use history. This reliability is crucial for maintaining trust in testing procedures and for supporting compliance with industry regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
