Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Bath, South Carolina. If you require a hair or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing ensures accessibility with testing centers across all cities Nationwide ready to conduct these evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. These analyses can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor-made testing options.

In recent times, the reliance on hair follicle drug tests has increased for drug screening. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse specialists now favor hair drug tests over the conventional urine analyses. Such tests serve entities with strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and probation supervision. Key advantages include a detection window that extends up to 90 days, collected under supervised procedures, minimizing the chances of tampering. Nevertheless, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of hair as it grows, hair offers an extended timeline of substance usage. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or analyses above 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for accurate weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is first integrated into a lab’s workflow. This step includes ensuring the sample is properly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data recording that isn’t managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective means to dismiss drug presence in most cases, any positive result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples with presumptive positivity in Screening require further confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves removing drugs from hair at a concentration much lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which accounts for hair drug screening being one of the more challenging methodologies.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is used to confirm any positive screening outcome. All samples showing presumptive positivity are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The complete process spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can detect drug presence up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Testing integrity: It is notably hard to cheat a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage patterns: Hair tests can illustrate a history of drug use over an extended timeframe, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It generally requires 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually pricier than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
