Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Beech Island, South Carolina. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, we excel in hair analyses, with centers in every major city nationwide capable of conducting them. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle assessments. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug testing over traditional urine testing. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, court systems, and probationary programs frequently use these. The main advantage is the extended 90-day detection window for drug use and the test's resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain the standard for detecting drug usage within the prior five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is widely regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair traps biomarkers within its fibers, offering a comprehensive long-term overview of alcohol and drug use. When collected near the scalp, hair provides an approximate 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG add-ons or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing phase where a sample is integrated into a laboratory’s system. This step includes verifying that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary and cost-effective method to check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening can eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that are presumptive positives in Screening need secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging procedure.

All positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation, as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing reveals drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is difficult, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: Provides a timeline of drug usage over an extended period, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate drug use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expenses: Generally costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
