Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Blythewood, South Carolina. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair analysis. With facilities in every city across the Nation, we can conduct hair testing. The typical requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

There's been an increased shift toward hair follicle drug testing in recent times. A growing number of employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine ones. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal entities, and individuals on probation utilize hair follicle tests. The main advantage is its extended detection window, frequently up to 90 days, and the collection process is observed, making tampering nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent use within the last 5 days, urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have gained recognition as a potent means for identifying substance and alcohol usage. By entrapping biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand, hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances. When secured close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hairs (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equal quantity of body hair may be used. When referencing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's infrastructure. This encompasses confirming the sample's seal and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening implies an initial rapid assessment for substance misuse. Though Screening serves as a budget-friendly way to exclude substance use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples deemed tentatively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample be tentatively positive at Screening, more hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration in contrast to other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging approach to execute.

Verification of any positive Screening outcome occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples undergo a pre-confirmation wash as needed. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify substance usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug analysis, hence yielding more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: Provides a pattern of substance use over time, not restricted to recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Detecting substances in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses generally incur higher costs compared to other drug screening methods.
  • Differences in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although sometimes termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
