Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Brookdale, South Carolina. Whether you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in these assessments, with facilities across the nation, including Brookdale. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is sufficient for testing. Our analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, the preference for drug testing methodologies has shifted towards hair follicle testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts increasingly favor this over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for organizations with strict drug policies, judicial requirements, and probation monitoring. They offer a longer detection window of up to 90 days, feature observed collection, and are resistant to tampering, though urine tests remain the best for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an influential approach for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair ensnares long-term traces of alcohol and drugs by holding biomarkers within the structure of the developing hair shaft. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window for alcohol and drugs of up to roughly three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, deemed the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler's scale. If head hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. Reference to head hair means only scalp hair. Body hair includes other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in laboratory processing of a drug testing result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample in a lab's system. It comprises verifying that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a quick preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in legal contexts. Samples indicating potential positivity during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a potential positive result during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair in far lower concentrations than in other measures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is among the more complex methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results is pursued via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, as required. The laboratory steps from Accessioning to Confirmation are evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are notably challenging to manipulate, lending to more reliable results.
  • Historical insights: Provides an overview of drug use patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs become noticeable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Attributes such as hair color and personal disparities in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
