Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Cades, SC. Specializing in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, we provide services through nationwide centers, including every city. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the scalp or body is typically needed. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly employed hair follicle methods. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Ideal for zero-tolerance employers and probationers, hair tests offer extended detection periods up to 90 days and require observed collection, making them nearly un-tamperable. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urinary testing remains most exact.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This method records an extended timeline of substance usage by embedding markers within the fibers of the growing hair. When clipped near the skin surface, it can reveal up to a roughly 3-month timeframe of drug and alcohol consumption. This method is straightforward to obtain, slightly challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a standard #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, deemed optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or testing exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's preferred to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug testing result involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the laboratory's processing of a sample. This phase includes confirming the sample is properly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entry that wasn't included in an electronic custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude substance use in most samples, a positive result here must be verified for legal acceptance. Samples showing initial positive results in Screening do need further verification.

If a sample indicates a positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample to prepare for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug analysis the most complex method to execute.

Verification of a positive Screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Any samples initially testing positive are cleansed before verification if necessary. The full analysis process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify substance use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection range.
  • Challenging to evade: It’s quite challenging to avoid detection with a hair drug test, therefore yielding more reliable results.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It can map out a timeline of substance use across a duration, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days for substances to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are often pricier than other substance testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Cades, SC, hair follicle drug testing provides numerous advantages over traditional urine tests. Unlike urine tests, hair tests offer an extended detection time up to 90 days, giving a broader view of substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
