In Chappells, South Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. If you require a drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in hair sample tests and maintain centers across all cities nationwide to conduct these tests. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body may be used. These hair tests can determine drug usage, alcohol/ETG, or customized test options.

Increasingly, drug testing procedures include the hair follicle drug test. This method is preferred by many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests support employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial decisions, and individuals on probation. These tests evidence drug use over extended periods, offering detection up to 90 days and are difficult to manipulate. However, for detecting recent use within the last few days, urine tests remain the optimal choice.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a historical record for alcohol and various drugs by capturing biomarkers in the strands as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, the sample is resistant to tampering, and it is convenient to transport.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to gather 150mg of the sample. It is recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair references only scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (beard, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial procedure of interfacing a sample with a laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial swift test for drugs. While it is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive result in Screening needs confirmation to be accepted in court. Samples detected as presumptively positive during Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are taken from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to undertake.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo a wash before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests offer a detection period of up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter window offered by urine tests.
  • Cheat-resistant: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, making outcomes more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: Provides a usage pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Chappells, SC, hair follicle drug testing is a superior method to urine testing, offering distinct advantages. It identifies drug use over a much longer time, providing employers with a detailed view of an individual's substance history. Hair testing's superior detection accuracy and reduced susceptibility to tampering make it a preferable choice over traditional urine tests.

While urine tests are limited to recent drug usage, hair tests provide a comprehensive overview of up to 90 days, making them invaluable in assessing one's long-term habits. This extended detection window allows for more reliable and robust insights into one's substance use behavior.

Extended Detection Window

In Chappells, SC, hair follicle testing is renowned for its extended detection window, monitoring drug use up to 90 days. This comprehensive review is invaluable for employers seeking detailed insight into an employee's substance use history, ensuring they make informed decisions. Compared to other tests, the prolonged period tracked by hair analysis sets a high standard in drug testing.

This extended detection capability affords an unmatched perspective over an individual's drug use. It offers a thorough account not achievable through tests like urine, which are limited by shorter windows, thereby ensuring a greater understanding of one's historical drug intake.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
