Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cherokee Falls, South Carolina. Our specialty in hair testing ensures that whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we've got you covered with testing centers across all U.S. cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient. These tests can detect drugs and alcohol/ETG, with additional customizable options available.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a prevalent method for drug detection. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over conventional urine tests, especially in zero-tolerance policies. With a detection window of up to 90 days, hair tests are nearly impossible to tamper with, offering more reliable results than urine tests, particularly for identifying drug use beyond the most recent 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers in the hair fibers, hair provides an extensive timeline of drug and alcohol use. Samples collected near the scalp can reveal drug use and alcohol consumption up to roughly 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (approximately equivalent to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred sample size for testing. For EtG and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. It’s advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. The term "head hair" specifically indicates scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses other hair types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially logged into the lab's system. This step verifies that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any needed data entry if not using an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Although cost-effective, positive results from Screening must be verified for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a positive result, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. Drugs are then extracted at a lower concentration from hair compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair testing a complex procedure.

Measurements detected during Screening are validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with any presumptive positive results undergo pre-confirmation washing as necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to bypass: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, improving result accuracy.
  • Traces usage patterns: It reveals drug use patterns over time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not on the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
