Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services throughout Cherryvale, South Carolina. For those in need of drug or alcohol hair tests, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and our testing facilities span all cities nationwide, ready to conduct these tests. Typically, a minimum hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is required. Hair tests are versatile, capable of identifying drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offering tailored options.

Over the past few years, the preference for hair follicle drug tests over traditional methods has increased significantly. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now favor these tests over urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests cater to companies with strict drug-free policy mandates, judicial settings, and individuals under probation. The major advantage lies in their extended detection window, spanning approximately 90 days, within an observed collection, minimizing chances of falsification. However, for drug consumption within the last five days, urine tests remain unparalleled in precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for uncovering drug and alcohol usage. Hair holds a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A hair specimen measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), taken nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, the same amount of body hair can be collected. The term head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in the laboratory comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering additional data not provided via an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening entails a preliminary examination for prohibited substances. While Screening is an economical method to discard drug usage in most samples, a positive screen needs verification to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples indicating a presumptively positive result in Screening require confirmation through further tests.

Should a sample show presumptively positive results at the Screening stage, additional hair from the original specimen is used for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are drawn out from hair at much lower concentrations than in other testing methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to carry out.

The Confirmation of any positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptive positive undergo a cleaning process before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory method from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are resistant to cheating, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It supplies a pattern of drug consumption over a duration, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: Drugs become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
