Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Clarks Hill, South Carolina. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair evaluations, with testing facilities available in every city across the USA ready to conduct hair testing. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is generally required. These tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing practices have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug assessments. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists often favor hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance organizations, courts, and individuals under probation utilize these tests. The key advantage is a prolonged detection window for drugs, typically spanning up to 90 days, captured via an observed collection process, making it nearly impossible to manipulate. However, for detecting very recent drug use, within the last five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they develop. Collecting hair near the scalp allows for an approximately 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy for dispatch.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is suggested. In scenarios where scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. Head hair specifically denotes scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for analyzing a drug test includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab's system. This phase ensures that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addresses any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening provides an initial, rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Though cost-efficient for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that register presumptively positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

For samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are separated from hair at lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome utilizes methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing before confirmation. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire lab procedure is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to adulterate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, rendering the outcomes more accurate.
  • Historical data provision: It provides an overview of drug usage trends over time, beyond just current use.

Limitations:

  • Detection gap for recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become observable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
