Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Cleveland, South Carolina. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol examinations, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in these tests, with facilities available in cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be utilized. These tests assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing procedures.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored the hair follicle approach. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts mandate hair over urine tests. Hair follicle screenings benefit employers with zero-tolerance drug use policies, judicial requirements, and probation arrangements. The advantage is its extended detection up to 90 days, with observed collection minimizing tampering, although urine tests prevail in short-term detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a vital resource for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains long-term evidence of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a 90-day detection period for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece of around 200 hair strands (roughly resembling a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, supplementary tests, and analyses exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to have 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advisable. In cases where scalp hair isn’t accessible, a similar volume of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing procedure is composed of four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step verifies the proper sealing and transportation of the sample, generates a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) at random, and fulfills any additional data entry requirements not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid evaluation for drugs. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples, confirmation is necessary for a positive screen to be valid in legal settings. Samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Presumptive positives in the Screening phase lead to additional hair being extracted from the primary sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening confirmations utilize GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if required. The entire laboratory sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair recognition and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a lesser detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, leading to more precise results.
  • Historical usage insights: These tests can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth might influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
