In Clifton, South Carolina, complete hair follicle drug testing is offered by Accredited Drug Testing. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, we have specialized centers ready for this service across the nation. Typically, hair from the crown of your head, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is required, though body hair may be used. Hair testing covers a range of substances, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable options.

Hair follicle testing has recently become a more common method for drug screening. Many employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. This is due to its extensive detection window—up to 90 days—and observer-collected, tamper-resistant features. Although urine tests remain accurate for recent drug use within five days, hair tests are notably difficult to deceive.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When hair is sampled close to the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to around 3 months. The collection process is straightforward, with minimal risk of tampering, and shipping is convenient.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp is ideal for testing, yielding 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional screenings, and those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair refer solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (like facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The fundamental stages in processing a drug test result in a laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s systems. This process involves checking that the sample’s seal and shipment were intact, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drug presence. While it's a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most cases, positive screens must undergo confirmation to be legally valid. Samples indicated as positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

For samples indicated as positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is drawn from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation for any positive result in Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Any samples preliminarily marked as positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, longer than urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: The difficulty in tampering with a hair drug test enhances the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals patterns of substance use over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing is often costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the strand of hair, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Clifton, SC, hair follicle testing stands superior to urine testing, offering enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. A key advantage of hair testing is its long-term detection capability. Unlike urine tests, which are limited to recent use, hair testing provides a broad view of an individual's drug habits. This comprehensive insight ensures a more trustworthy outcome for those enforcing drug-free policies.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Clifton, SC, sets it apart, allowing employers to trace drug use as far back as 90 days. This comprehensive scope gives a detailed view of a subject's substance history, beyond the limitations of short-term tests. Employers benefit from this by making better informed decisions regarding applicant and employee substance use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing is recognized for its resistance to tampering in Clifton, SC, providing reliable and unquestionable results. This testing method inherently reduces the risk of sample adulteration—it's difficult to deceive, offering peace of mind to employers and authorities. Integrity in sample collection and analysis is a defining feature, ensuring credible results every time.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
