Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug screening in Cokesbury, South Carolina. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, our centers are located in cities nationwide, equipped to execute hair testing with precision. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair will suffice. Hair analysis can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailor-made testing functionalities.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a predominant method in drug testing, often preferred by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Such tests are required by those enforcing strict anti-drug policies or overseeing probation. The key advantage is the extended detection window for drug use, reaching up to 90 days, involving an observed gathering process, which makes manipulation nearly impossible. For detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of its strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for analysis. For EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we solely mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in processing a lab drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with introducing a sample into the lab's system, ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain-of-custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary check for drugs. While Screening provides a cost-effective method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal acceptance. Presumptively positive samples in Screening require secondary verification.

In cases of presumptive positive results in Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the specimen for Extraction. At this step, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of positive Screening results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests offer detection of drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Tracks usage over time: It provides a pattern of drug consumption over an extended duration, rather than detecting only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It typically requires 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When evaluating drug testing methods in Cokesbury, SC, hair follicle tests surpass urine tests in terms of detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests delve deeper, uncovering drug use over an extended duration. Their capability to accurately reflect substance history provides an advantage over conventional urine samples.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
