At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Converse, SC. Our expertise in hair testing spans the nation, where our centers provide both drug and alcohol testing using hair samples. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required to conduct these tests, which can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to meet specific testing needs.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have grown in popularity for drug screening. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are preferred due to their zero-tolerance compliance, extended detection period, and difficulty to manipulate. Yet, for substance use detection within a 5-day window, urine tests still take precedence as the most precise measure.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair strands entrap biomarkers within their fibers, offering a comprehensive history of substance use. When collected near the root, hair samples can provide an assessment timeframe of roughly 90 days for alcohol and drug presence. The collection process is straightforward, with less risk of tampering, and the samples are easy to dispatch.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of about 200 hairs (equivalent in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100 mg, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150 mg of the specimen is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler's scale to determine specimen weight is recommended. In cases where scalp hair is unattainable, an equal quantity of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair. The term 'body hair' encompasses all other types, including facial and axillar.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results primarily comprises four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This step includes ensuring both the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning an arbitrary Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary evaluation for drug usage. Although Screening serves as an economical method to initially eliminate most samples, a positive result necessitates further verification for legal admissibility. Samples indicating potential positives during Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial collection and readied for Extraction. This phase concentrates on extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower levels than other methodologies like urine or oral fluid, thereby making hair drug screening an intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive via Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples indicating presumptive positivity are washed as necessary before confirmation. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Due to its nature, cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: Offers patterns of drug usage over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: A timeframe of approximately 5-7 days is needed for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher expenses compared to other methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Even though these tests are termed "hair follicle tests," the hair strands, not the subscalp follicles, undergo analysis.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests to urine tests in Converse, SC, significant advantages become clear. The sensitivity and extensive detection window of hair testing offer an unparalleled understanding of substance use patterns. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
