In Cordova, South Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. As specialists in hair testing, we offer facilities nationwide capable of conducting hair and alcohol analyses. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is necessary for testing, which screens for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more popular in recent years, being preferred by employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. These tests support zero-tolerance policies by offering a detection window of up to 90 days, making it difficult to deceive the system. However, urine tests remain optimal for assessing recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a compelling method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. The hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. If collected near the scalp, hair can furnish a detection range of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, quite challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A sample of 1.5-inch, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp will provide 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10 panel tests, collecting 150mg is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be utilized. The phrase "head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair. "Body hair" refers to every other hair category (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of a drug test result comprises four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample into the lab’s system. This involves confirming that the sample was adequately sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening refers to an initial brief assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be accepted in court. Any samples suspected to be positive in Screening need a secondary validation.

If a sample is suspected to be positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is pulled from the original sample and arranged for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to administer.

Any positive screening result is confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation if needed. The lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine testing which has a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Tampering with a hair drug test is highly challenging, providing more precise results.
  • Historical insight: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over a timeframe, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
