Complete hair follicle drug assessment is provided by Accredited Drug Testing in Early Branch, SC. Our expertise lies in hair drug and alcohol testing, with centers across the nation ready to cater to your needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary for analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Recent trends have shown a shift towards hair follicle tests for drug assessment. More employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals are moving away from urine tests to adopt this method. This type of testing is favored by employers enforcing stringent no-drug policies, courts, and those under probation. Its main advantage is a longer detection window, covering up to 90 days, ensuring observed collection with minimal risk of manipulation. Nonetheless, urine tests are preferred for drug detection within the last 5 days due to higher accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer a comprehensive record of drug and alcohol use over time, as they encapsulate biomarkers within the fibers during hair growth. When collected near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol usage up to a roughly three-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

An optimal hair sample consists of 1.5 inches of approximately 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil), yielding 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional substances, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It's recommended to measure this using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, equivalent body hair is acceptable. When referred to as head hair, it signifies hair from the scalp exclusively, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial integration into a laboratory's system. This stage ensures proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry that an electronic chain of custody may not have covered.

Screening is a preliminary, rapid test for drug abuse detection. While cost-effective for ruling out drug usage in most samples, positive results in Screening require confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate secondary verification.

For samples testing positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is sourced from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted at concentrations significantly lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening complex.

Confirmation of positive results from Screening is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug testing can identify substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus enhancing the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Identifies long-term patterns: It reveals ongoing patterns of drug use, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs become noticeable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors like hair color and differences in individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", this test actually evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
