Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance testing in Estill, South Carolina. Whether it's drug or alcohol testing, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with facilities across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is necessary. Hair testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for various hair analysis needs.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly included hair follicle testing. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often choose hair testing over traditional urine tests. It's favored by those with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and for individuals on probation. The key advantage is its extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, observed in a monitored collection, and nearly cheat-proof. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests retain the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an efficient means for detecting alcohol and drug presence. Hair captures a prolonged history regarding alcohol and drugs through the retention of biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection duration for alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, the likelihood of tampering is low, and it is easy to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch sample, consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (approximating a #2 pencil's width) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests with more than 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equal quantity of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four fundamental phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing as a sample enters a laboratory’s system. This step assures that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, it assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial, swift check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a screen yielding a positive must be confirmed to be valid in court. Samples tentatively positive in Screening need a further confirmation test.

If a sample appears tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at concentrations much less than those in other methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is achieved using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Hair drug testing provides insights into drug usage over time, not just recent use scenarios.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variability in factors such as hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often misnamed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand itself, rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Estill, SC: Hair follicle tests surpass traditional urine tests in terms of accuracy and reliability. Hair testing offers a broader history of substance use, capturing up to 90 days of potential drug activity, compared to the relatively shorter window of urine tests.

Additionally, hair testing is less prone to adulteration. Employers seeking a more comprehensive assessment of substance use will find hair testing significantly superior due to its higher detection accuracy and extensive substance history coverage.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Estill, SC: Hair follicle testing stands out for its ability to detect drugs over an extended period, up to 90 days. This feature allows employers to gain a thorough understanding of an individual’s drug history, far beyond what traditional tests offer.

For organizations wanting insights into long-term substance use, this attribute of hair testing is invaluable, providing a deeper look into an employee's or applicant’s past actions regarding substance intake.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
