Accredited Drug Testing offers a thorough hair follicle drug test service in Fairmont Mills, South Carolina. Whether you require a drug or alcohol analysis, our centers specialize in such testing. We have facilities in all cities across the nation to perform hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly utilize hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer these over traditional urine tests. Businesses with strict drug regulations, judicial systems, and parole agreements often demand hair tests. The main advantage is the extended detection span, up to 90 days, and the observed sample collection minimizes cheating. However, for drug use in the past 5 days, urine testing remains most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as a robust method to uncover drug and alcohol consumption. By encapsulating biomarkers within the strands, hair offers an extended timeline for detecting substances. When procured near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month period of substance use. Its collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising about 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) sourced near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four fundamental phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This step confirms that the sample is properly sealed and delivered, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary, swift examination for illegal substances. While it offers an economical method to exclude drug presence in most cases, a positive screen requires confirmation to be considered legally valid. Specimens indicative of a positive result during Screening necessitate a subsequent verification step.

If a specimen indicates a positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, substances are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging testing method.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples identified as potentially positive are washed before confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to shorter detection periods of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair test is notably difficult, enhancing the precision of results.
  • Retrieves historical usage patterns: It supplies insight into drug consumption patterns over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The test, commonly called a "hair follicle test", actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
