Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Five Forks, South Carolina. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in this field and have nationwide testing centers capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

In recent times, the frequency of hair follicle drug tests for conducting drug screenings has increased. Many businesses, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, as well as court systems, and those on probation, utilize hair follicle tests. The chief advantage is their extended detection period for drug use, up to 90 days, collected in a supervised setting, minimizing the risk of tampering. When testing for drug consumption in the immediate past week, urine tests remain the most precise methodology.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an effective approach for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and various drugs due to the entrapment of biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected adjacent to the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is easy, with a low likelihood of tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising approximately 200 hair strands (about the dimensions of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. When referencing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result broadly involves four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial incorporation of a sample into the laboratory system. This encompasses confirming that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data input not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Even though Screening is cost-effective for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. All samples that are potentially positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation process.

If a sample is potentially positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers longitudinal data: It can reveal a pattern of drug utilization over time, not just limited to recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
