In Glendale, South Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our national testing centers are equipped to assist. The test typically requires 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or involve customized options.

The trend towards hair follicle drug testing has grown in past years. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored for zero-tolerance policies, probation conditions, and judicial requirements due to their extended drug detection—up to 90 days—, and resistance to tampering. Nevertheless, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair, it offers a long-duration history of substance use. Hair samples obtained near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol activity for a period extending up to around three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient for transportation.

Securing a 1.5-inch section containing approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which serves as the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary assessments, or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. In situations where scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. References to head hair pertain strictly to scalp hair. In contrast, body hair encompasses all other forms, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is integrated into a laboratory’s framework. This step includes confirming that the sample is appropriately sealed and transported, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for substance misuse. Although cost-effective for dismissing drug usage in most specimens, confirmation of positive screens is essential for legal acceptance. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

Should a specimen appear positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at substantially lower concentrations than other techniques, such as urine or oral fluid, highlighting hair drug screening's complexity.

Confirmation of positive screenings is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Necessary washing of all presumptive positive samples occurs before confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can reflect drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited timeframe.
  • Resistance to deception: The integrity of hair drug tests is challenging to compromise, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical usage data: It presents a timeline of drug consumption over an extended duration, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It typically takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair samples.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color along with individual differences in hair growth rates can alter the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite common reference as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Glendale, SC, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. The enhanced detection accuracy and reliability of hair tests make them a preferred choice. Unlike urine tests, hair tests provide a broader detection window and reduce the risk of sample adulteration, ensuring that results remain honest and dependable.

Extended Detection Window

One significant advantage of hair follicle testing in Glendale, SC, is the extended detection window. This method can spot drug use for up to 90 days, allowing for a more comprehensive view of an individual's substance history. For employers, this means a better understanding of an applicant's or employee's past behavior, aiding in more informed decision-making.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Glendale, SC, the hair follicle testing method provides a robust defense against sample tampering. With its nature to collect samples directly from the individual and test the hair's keratin matrix, it minimizes manipulation risks. As a result, the test stands out for its reliability, ensuring results that employers, courts, and individuals can trust without question.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
