Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Graniteville, South Carolina. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, offering facilities in every city across the nation ready to conduct these assessments. Generally, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body parts is necessary. Hair analyses can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing solutions.

In recent years, the approach to drug testing has consistently incorporated hair follicle drug assessments. A growing number of employers, legal entities, and addiction specialists are favoring hair drug analyses over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial bodies, and those on probation frequently utilize hair follicle tests. A key advantage is the extended detection span, typically up to 90 days, collected through observed methodology, rendering it exceptionally difficult to manipulate. Nonetheless, for drug detection within the preceding 5 days, urine remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

The perception of hair testing has evolved to become a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage up to roughly a 3-month period. The collection is straightforward, adulteration is relatively challenging, and transportation is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising nearly 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp achieves 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and verification. For EtG additions and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is endorsed. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses any other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory steps for processing a drug test result distinctly involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was securely sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening includes a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Though cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most cases, any positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening mandate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is utilized from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at notably lower concentrations than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptive positive undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is inspected under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug consumption up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, improving result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally incur higher costs compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result discrepancies: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand itself and not the scalp's hair follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
