Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services throughout Hilda, South Carolina. If a hair or alcohol drug test is what you require, Accredited Drug Testing's expertise in hair assessment is noteworthy. With centers across every city nationwide, these centers are equipped to perform hair tests employing 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your body in most cases. Testing encompasses drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained traction as a preferred method for drug screening. Increasingly, employers, judiciary bodies, and Substance Abuse experts demand hair drug tests over typical urine tests. Hair follicle tests serve best for zero-tolerance workplaces, legal scenarios, and probation cases. These tests offer extended drug detection periods, potentially up to 90 days, are observed during sample collection, and are widely considered cheat-proof. Despite this, urine tests retain their precision in identifying drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have been increasingly acknowledged as an effective methodology for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair provides enduring evidence of alcohol and substances by encapsulating markers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When collected adjacent to the scalp, hair can present a detection timeframe of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the dimensions of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For Ethyl Glucuronide (EtG), augmentations, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair indicate scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test outcomes involves four fundamental stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory's framework. This encompasses verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift examination for substances of misuse. Although Screening is an economical method to negate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples presenting presumptive positivity in Screening require secondary verification.

If a specimen is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex technique to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection periods of urine tests.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to tampering, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
