Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluation services in India Hook, South Carolina. When you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair testing, with centers available in all major cities Nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is generally required. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become more common for drug screening. They're increasingly chosen by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over standard urine tests. These tests are crucial for zero-tolerance employers and legal authorities. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is its extensive detection duration of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making tampering nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of its developing strand. If sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal a history of drug or alcohol use for up to 3 months. The collection process is easy, the possibility of tampering is limited, and it is convenient to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For advanced tests, such as EtG, or those above 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample is suggested. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair. In contrast, "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is registered into a lab's system, ensuring it was properly sealed and shipped, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering extra data not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Although it serves as a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be legally acceptable. Samples with a potential positive in Screening must undergo a follow-up confirmation.

If Screening suggests a presumptive positive outcome, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is the most intricate method.

Any positive result from Screening undergoes Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potentially positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair tests have a high accuracy level since it's challenging to deceive them.
  • Offers historical insight: It traces a longer drug usage pattern over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent use detection: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days after drug usage.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in growth rates may influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
