In Jackson, South Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive solutions for hair follicle drug testing. If you're seeking a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise is in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide for conducting hair tests. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, sourced from the head or body. We offer analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom hair testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity over recent years as an alternative method of drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals now often prefer hair tests over urine tests. For employers enforcing strict drug policies, or for court and probation requirements, the hair test provides a significant advantage due to its longer detection period, up to 90 days, and its resistance to tampering. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly acknowledged as an effective approach to identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within its growing strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of roughly 3 months for substances like alcohol and various drugs. It is easy to collect hair samples, relatively challenging to interfere with them, and shipping is straightforward.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) taken from the scalp's proximity provides 100mg of hair, which is considered optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or assessments beyond 10-panel tests, it is advised to utilize 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the specimen. In situations where scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, it strictly means scalp hair. Body hair includes all alternate hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially integrated into a laboratory system. This step ensures the sample is adequately sealed, shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry not managed by an electronic custody chain.

Screening conducts a preliminary examination for potential drug presence. Although Screening serves as an economical approach to exclude substance use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for legal admissibility. Samples that return presumptive positive results in Screening mandate additional confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample, prepared for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to hair drug screening's complexity.

The Confirmation of any positive screen is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Preceding Confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing if required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is reviewed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Increased test integrity: Cheating on hair drug tests is exceptionally difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Chronological usage data: It illustrates drug use patterns over an extended timeframe, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests generally incur greater expenses compared to other testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While often labeled as "hair follicle tests", this type of test evaluates the hair strand itself rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Jackson, SC, the benefits of hair follicle testing over urine testing are notable. Hair testing offers superior detection accuracy, capturing substance use over a prolonged period compared to traditional urine tests.

Employers requiring stricter substance use policies find hair testing particularly advantageous. Its ability to provide a more comprehensive drug use history enhances its reliability, surpassing the capabilities of standard urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

With its extended detection window, hair follicle testing in Jackson, SC reveals substance use over as much as 90 days prior. This longer detection period furnishes employers with a broad perspective on an individual's drug history, which is not possible with many other testing methods.

This comprehensive insight assists employers in making informed decisions regarding potential hires or existing employees, thereby enhancing workplace safety and reliability.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Jackson, SC, hair follicle testing is renowned for its tamper-resistant nature. By significantly minimizing the chances of sample adulteration, this testing method ensures that the results are both reliable and unquestionable.

The robustness of hair follicle testing lies in its collection process, which is observed directly, making it virtually impossible to manipulate the sample. This gives all parties greater assurance in the integrity of the results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
