Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Jenkinsville, SC. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers available nationwide in all cities to conduct the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair analysis can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair test options.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screening methods. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers frequently utilize hair tests due to the extensive 90-day detection period, supervised collection, and difficulty in tampering. However, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing emerges as an effective resource for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged historical record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair’s fibers as it grows. When pulled near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection timeline of roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect hair, challenging to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp is needed to collect 100mg of hair, an optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. Head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the laboratory analysis of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial input of a sample into the laboratory’s system. It comprises verifying the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, giving it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody procedure.

Screening performs a preliminary swift assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly way to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive screener needs affirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Presumptive positive samples in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If the Screening stage shows a sample to be presumptively positive, additional hair is acquired from the preliminary specimen for Extraction preparation. In this process, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration than in alternative methodologies (ex. urine or oral fluid), accounting for the challenge in conducting hair drug screenings.

The Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory cycle, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is supervised in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the result precision.
  • Historical insight: It presents a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair in about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally costlier than other drug-testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Although frequently dubbed "hair follicle tests," the examination focuses on analyzing the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
