Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Kiawah Island, South Carolina. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers available in all cities nationwide to conduct the test effectively. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required for analysis. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now often require a hair test over a standard urine test. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations with strict drug-free policies and for individuals under court supervision, thanks to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, supervised collection process, and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair serves as a historical record by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Collected from near the scalp, hair can provide up to a three-month detection timeline for substances. It is easy to gather, less prone to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample containing about 200 strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, perfectly suited for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Use a jeweler's scale for weighing. If head hair is insufficient, a similar volume of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result has four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is entered into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample's seal and secure shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary assessment for drugs. Although cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive Screening result requires further confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples yielding positive results in Screening necessitate a confirmatory test.

If a sample tests positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging techniques.

Confirmation follows any positive Screening outcome using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing positive results in Screening are washed as needed before Confirmation. The entire process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical insight: It can reveal drug use patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: A span of 5-7 days is needed for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than alternative methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
