Situated in Ladson, South Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in this method, we have centers in every major city across the US, ready to administer your hair or alcohol test. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer bespoke options for hair analysis.

Recently, hair follicle tests have gained traction over traditional methods in drug testing. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those tracking probation progress increasingly turn to this technique. Its distinct advantage is a 90-day detection span, ensuring results are gathered under supervision and leaving little room for tampering. Nonetheless, for tracing drug use in the last five days, urine tests hold an accuracy edge.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmatory tests. For EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is missing, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair alone. Body hair implies all other hairs (beard, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential stages in processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of initially processing a sample within a lab’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is economical for eliminating drug usage in most samples, any test yielding a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally acceptable. Any sample yielding a presumptive positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirming any positive screen result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that show a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test poses significant challenges, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a drug usage trend over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis generally incurs higher costs than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations may influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Ladson, SC, hair follicle testing offers clearer insights when compared to urine tests. Accuracy and reliability set hair testing apart, with a window of up to 90 days for drug detection. Meanwhile, urine tests provide a narrower detection window. Employers favor hair tests for comprehensive analyses.

Extended Detection Window

Offering an extended detection window, hair follicle testing in Ladson, SC, identifies drug usage up to 90 days prior. This long-term view allows employers to assess a person's complete substance history. Unlike shorter-term tests, hair testing provides a comprehensive perspective on drug use, supporting informed hiring decisions and ongoing employee assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
