Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Landrum, South Carolina. Whether it's for drug or alcohol identification, our specialized hair testing centers across the country are ready to serve you. Typically, hair samples should be 1.5 to 2 inches from the head's crown or other body parts. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has become a favored method for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often turn to hair testing rather than traditional urine tests. It's used by employers enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and probation departments. A primary advantage of hair tests is their longer detection period—up to 90 days—with observed collection, making them hard to manipulate. However, urine remains better for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

* You must register by phone or online to receive your donor pass/registration prior to proceeding to the testing center. You must bring a valid government issued ID along with the registration/barcode number which was sent to you by email.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. The hair retains a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 strands closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, a sample size of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, the equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory processing of a drug testing result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to introducing a sample into the lab's system, ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial quick scan for drugs. Despite its cost-effectiveness for excluding drug use in most cases, a positive screening outcome must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing prior to necessary confirmation. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review in line with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine assessments which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to evade: Evading a hair drug analysis is notably difficult, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Supplies historical insight: It offers a pattern of drug use over time rather than solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are generally more costly compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors including hair color and individual hair growth variations can affect the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp
