Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle substance testing in Little Mountain, South Carolina. For those in need of hair analyses for drugs or alcohol, our expertise is in this method, with centers available in cities across the Nation ready to conduct these tests. Generally, hair of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or body suffices. Tests can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific requirements.

In recent years, hair follicle testing has increasingly been favored for drug detection. This method is now commonly mandated by employers, legal bodies, and addiction professionals over the standard urine analysis. Employers with zero-tolerance policies and judicial systems often use hair tests. The key advantage is the detection window, which spans up to 90 days, using an observed collection method, making it nearly cheat-proof. However, for identifying recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to nearly a 90-day detection period for substances like alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch strand sample with around 200 hairs (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the hair specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is advised. If there is no scalp hair available, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Meanwhile, body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The laboratory processes a drug test result following four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial phase of integrating a sample into the lab’s system. This phase involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data that an electronic chain of custody system did not provide.

Screening consists of a rapid initial drug check. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to discard the possibility of drug use in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally defensible. Any samples that are tentatively positive during Screening need secondary confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening the most sophisticated methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any tentative positive result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • High difficulty to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle and urine drug tests in Little Mountain, SC, hair testing emerges as superior. This method ensures higher detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests limited by a shorter detection window, hair analysis reveals a broader history of substance use, serving as a more comprehensive assessment tool for employers and authorities.

Hair follicle testing outperforms urine tests in Little Mountain, SC due to its enhanced reliability and thorough substance detection capability. Companies find value in its unobtrusive nature and effective results, boosting workplace safety and compliance.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle drug testing provides a substantial advantage due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days, crucial in Little Mountain, SC. This long window offers employers an extensive view of an individual's substance history, proving invaluable during hiring processes or employee monitoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
